The Eighth Day, Chapter 1.1The waiter had written a note on the back of his check.  Shawn Jaffe stared at it, his brow furrowed in puzzlement.  His mouth dropped open, and he blinked his eyes several times, wondering if his vision had betrayed him.  Oftentimes, waiters left a cheerful farewell as if, “Have a great day!” was supposed to make you forget that you just paid twenty bucks for eggs and toast.  This time, however, the message was nothing so mundane.   
 Shawn snapped his head around toward the back of the restaurant in time to see who he thought was his waiter disappearing through the swinging doors behind The Eighth Day, Chapter 1.1

I Would Have Come Sooner...At first he thought he was still dreaming. It had been a good dream, a rarity these days. He was already starting to forget it and probably wouldn't remember any of it ten minutes from now. In the dream, he had been fishing with his son, Daniel, on Loon Lake in Minnesota. They had gone there for a week every summer for the last seven years. On this particular dream-afternoon, the sun hung high in a cloudless sky, and the fishing was good. He wished he could stay there forever.  
 
But he wasn't dreaming anymore. Daniel was still six months in his grave, his wife had still left him two months ago, and his cat still stood at the foot I Would Have Come Sooner...

Harry’s daughter was waiting for him at the kitchen table, her tiny hands wrapped around a plastic cup, a milk mustache dripping from her upper lip. Her legs dangled over the edge of the chair, swinging back and forth.  
 
She caught him by surprise, and he turned his back toward her, pretending to fumble in his pocket with one hand while he wiped at his eyes with the other.  
 
“Why aren’t you in bed?” He snapped at her, the words sounding harsher than he had intended.  
 
“Mommy was worried about you. She was afraid something bad happened.”

A Long Overdue Update

Wow. It's been several years since I've showed my face on deviantART. You might be wondering what I've been up to.

I am back from Korea and am currently stationed at Cairns Army Airfield at Fort Rucker, AL. I am now a Company Commander and just recently passed my Pilot in Command check ride.

As far as my writing goes, I took about a year and a half off due to ... well, let's just say there were other distractions. However, I'm glad to say that I'm writing again, and hope to have The Eighth Day, the novel that I have been working on for almost three years now, finished by the end of 2007.

My website is completely redesigned, and all of my short stories plus everything I've written of the Eighth Day is available online. I also put Chapter 1.1 up on deviantART. If you like it, please visit www.shimerdla.com to read the rest of the story. I will continue to update it as I write more.

Just bloody frikkin' brilliant. I don't know what it is about your writing that appeals to me so much, but I just... I don't know. Maybe I'm insane-- but I'm willing to bet you're just way beyond talented.

Thank you. Two years late, but thank you. I haven't visited deviantART in quite some time, and I regret to say that I haven't written during that time either.

Fortunately, I have gotten my priorities straightened out and I'm back to doing what (I think) I do best.

Thanks again for the kind words. I'll stop by your little piece of deviantART tomorrow when I have more time to say hello. Now, however, my bed is beckoning me to its warm embrace.
